Job Summary

Sam Schwartz is seeking a Senior Transportation Planner for our Washington, D.C. office to be part of a dynamic team that provides a range of planning services for clients, including corridor studies, safety analysis and planning, transit planning, strategic planning, community-wide multi-modal transportation plans, and complete streets concept development. The senior planner will be part of a cross-disciplinary team of consultants covering planning, urban design, and transportation engineering, and contribute to a wide variety of activities to support projects including technical analysis; public and stakeholder outreach; and development of maps, reports, presentations, and graphics.

Ideal candidates will be solutions-focused; articulate and client-facing, with the ability to communicate persuasively and develop positive team dynamics; and have demonstrated experience leading tasks or managing projects. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to understand and anticipate the larger client and business needs while successfully managing day-to-day project demands. Experience in analysis and strategy development in the topics of mobility equity and mobility justice are a plus.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

In this position, the successful candidate will both lead and support a wide range of projects and business development activities by performing various tasks including:

  • Leading interdisciplinary project teams
  • Managing project budgets and schedules
  • Maintaining strong client relationships
  • Identifying new business opportunities
  • Leading and contributing to proposal development and interview presentations
  • Representing the company at industry events
  • Leading project and stakeholder meetings
  • Conducting site visits and field observations,
  • Performing data analyses using GIS and spreadsheet-based models,
  • Performing planning-level transportation analyses
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports,
  • Developing presentation materials,
  • Preparing conceptual designs of proposed projects.

Skills and Qualifications

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively
  • Experience managing transportation projects, including management of staff, budgets, and clients
  • Understanding of, and interest in, marketing, networking, and business development
  • Knowledge of industry standards (e.g. AASHTO, MUTCD, HCM, NACTO, and other guidelines)
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS

Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Eight years of experience in the transportation planning field
  • Master's degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or related field
  • AICP certification strongly preferred
