Public Affairs Summer Intern - Des Moines, IA

Pay: $17 per hour

Schedule: Part-time, 15 hours per week, varied.

Shift times: The work schedule will vary depending on the week. It will be divided among tabling time, recruitment, and data entry.

Location: Des Moines, IA

Job type: Non-Exempt

Travel: Will travel to other cities outside of Des Moines to table on events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous professional or volunteer experience in organizing for reproductive health/justice/freedom, or a demonstrated interest in organizing.
  • Excitement to get out into the community and talk to people or in groups, over the phone or in-person, about reproductive freedom.
  • Availability during weekends and some nights to attend events and activities.
  • Passion for reproductive freedom.

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

Works with the Senior Advocacy Strategist to represent Planned Parenthood North Central States and Planned Parenthood of Iowa in summer events and activities:

  • Attend staff meetings and volunteer leaders' 1:1s to plan attending to tabling events, phone banks, canvassing, or any event assigned or approved by supervisor
  • Continuously performs data entry by using project management tool, Voter Activation Network (VAN).
  • Recruits and mobilizes volunteers, including volunteer leadership and moving volunteers up the ladder of leadership and engagement.
  • Identify and support patient advocates and storytellers

Learning Objective:

At the end of the internship, the Summer Intern will learn to:

  • Talk about the reproductive freedom movement and the status of policies affecting our rights in Iowa.
  • Grassroots organizing tactics and strategies critical to mobilizing communities and winning campaigns-like pitching volunteers leadership opportunities, phone banking, canvassing, recruitment, volunteer 1:1 meetings, and volunteer management
  • Use organizing tools like VAN, Hustle, etc.
  • Other professional development skills like planning and project management

End of the internship deliverable: A written report based on met deliverables and learnings overviewing specifics like the number of volunteers recruited, number of conversations tracked in VAN, events attended, and support provided
