Responsibilities

A-Team Solutions LLC is seeking a Medical Technologist for a full-time position for the VA in Charleston, SC

Duties and Responsibilities:

a. Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unsuitable. Prepares specimens for analysis, insuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained.

b. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections.

c. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports.

d. Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments on which trained. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Performs instrument maintenance, quality control, calibration, instrument troubleshooting, etc. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs.

e. Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures. Correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results.

f. Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by a physician and reports them directly.

g. Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system and for the editing and verification of the results recorded into the computer system.

h. Tests ordered as STAT must have results verified and released into the LIS within one (1) hour.

i. Reporting/Documentation Requirements. Releases verified (within quality control guidelines) patient results to the LIS. All patient test results are entered and verified into the VA computer system, VISTA/Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). All analyzers are interfaced, but the tech is responsible for checking the results for accuracy before verifying. Some manual entry of results will be necessary such as manual WBC Differentials, microscopic and kit or manual testing. This includes documentation of physician notification of critical lab results. Quality Control is documented in the appropriate logs for each department.

j. The medical technologist must be competent to complete procedures in the areas of (Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, Toxicology, Limited microbiology, and Immunohematology (blood bank). The generalist will demonstrate full competency in these sections of the laboratory. The technologist must have a good working knowledge of every section within the clinical laboratory to maximize the workforce and cover when emergency and/or shortage of personnel situations demonstrate a need. The medical technologist may be asked to perform other duties as required. The technologist must have a working knowledge of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.

k. Workload volume will vary daily. The medical technologist shall be expected to cooperate with and participate in all routine duties or functions related to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The generalist is cross trained to provide coverage as assigned in all sections of the laboratory when required training is met.

l. The Supervisory Medical Technologist and/or Chief, P&LMS shall monitor performance through direct observation as well as seek input from other Pathology & Laboratory Medicine staff (pathologists, technologist & administrative staff). Quality of work shall be monitored on an on-going, daily basis.

m. The Contracting Officer Representative (COR), or his/her designee shall be responsible for monitoring contract compliance and for verifying that services called for under the contract attested to by the Contractor have been received.

n. Listings of instrument manufacturers throughout this performance work statement are not intended to be all-inclusive. Rather, it is to give a representative list of instrumentation currently utilized by medical technologists and is subject to change throughout the life of the contract as technology changes.

o. The day shift, evening shift, and night shift position will work:

1. In Chemistry/Immunochemistry instrumentation is currently Abbott Diagnostics. The Medical Technologist will perform chemistry tests on blood, serum, and urine, using the current instrumentation. The Medical Technologist is also responsible for performing emergency procedures.

2. In Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis, the Medical Technologist will be responsible for performing CBC'S, automated and manual WBC differentials, red cell morphology, sedimentations rates, and coagulation testing using instrumentation which includes the Sysmex XN-9000, Stago Compact, and iSED ESR analyzer. The Medical Technologist will also perform urinalysis through the use of automated equipment such as the Iris as well as urine microscopics.

3. Responsibilities in Transfusion Medicine include a variety of procedures including typing, antibody screening and cross-matching blood (both routine and stat), processing blood received from blood centers. The Medical Technologist also conducts "suspected" transfusion reaction work-ups, issues blood and components to wards and operating room, processes platelets and cryoprecipitate, thaws FFP, releases uncross-matched blood when needed following appropriate protocol, orders blood through the Blood Center when needed, and assures appropriate records are complete. Knowledge of both tube and automated methods in Blood Bank as well as knowledge of the VBECS system, or a similar automated blood bank electronic record system is required.

4. In microbiology, the Medical Technologist will read STAT gram stains, set up cultures, perform molecular testing, and perform kit testing.

5. The Medical Technologist must have experience with a laboratory computer system integrated with the patient medical record.

6. The Medical Technologist must be familiar with College of American Pathology (CAP), The Joint Commission (TJC), and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory requirements that apply to the laboratory and blood bank.

7. The Medical Technologist shall be required to dress in a professional manner.

Requirements:

All Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Technicians performing services for the Contractor under this contract shall be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or an equivalent MT, MLS, MLT, CLT certification with (appropriate training) and a minimum of one (1) year of experience.
