Education:
Must have attended a specialized training program for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent
Licensures/Certifications:
* Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a registered nurse.
* Completion of "Healthcare Provider" CPR course, yearly.
* Prefer current FNE-A certification but will provide clinical training for RN who completed the didactic course within the past 3 months or who is registered to attend an FNE-A course
Experience:
Must have a minimum of two years of clinical experience, preferably in Women's Health or Emergency Medicine.
Skills:
* Interpersonal and verbal communication (oral and written) skills required in order to educate and comfort patients and their families, maintain effective contacts with a variety of hospital personnel, and maintain appropriate documentation records.
* Phlebotomy
* Excellent assessment skills
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
* Completes evidentiary examination per established protocols and consistently provides accurate, thorough documentation of the examination.
* Communicates effectively with victims of sexual assault, their families/SO, ED staff, law enforcement and officers of the court
* Recognizes victims needing immediate referrals to ED attending (I.e. psych treatment with disclosure, suicidal/homicidal ideation, identification of injuries not disclosed during triage)
* Follows SAFE procedures for laboratory specimens to be collected and medications to be administered and documents variances
* Provides appropriate referrals to victims and family members
Assessment
* Utilizes physical assessment and interviewing techniques.
* Anticipates need for intervention by other disciplines.
* Determines priorities for patient care needs or problems.
Planning
* Assesses the patient's discharge needs and ensure a safe environment with law enforcement.
* Coordinates referrals if necessary.
* Provide emergency resources if warranted per SAFE policy
Implementation
* Performs clinical nursing skills independently.
* Administers medications
* Initiates appropriate emergency procedures as necessary.
* Verbally communicates the patient's status to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.
* Communicates in a therapeutic manner with the patient, family and visitors.
* Applies teaching/learning principles in education of patient and family.
Teaching and Quality Improvement
* Participates in monthly mandatory SAFE staff meetings
* Meets with Clinical Program Manager as scheduled to review feedback of chart review after each examination is completed
