Job Description

Lead Technician is a working supervisory position which performs, plans and supervises the general maintenance, cleaning, and operation of grounds at school facilities. Lead Technician is responsible for assisting management in prioritizing, scheduling, and assigning daily work utilizing our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), SchoolDude. Responsibilities include directing crew members in daily operations including quality control, training, punctuality and safety as well as verifying the work of contractors and in-house projects through various stages of completion. The position is considered essential personnel for emergency situations, including inclement weather conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in establishing priorities, scheduling, and assigning the work of those engaged in various grounds activities that include, but are not limited to, patching of concrete walks, fence repair, tree removal, road and parking lot repairs, drainage, erosion control, improvement to school grounds/athletic fields and outdoor playground
  • Conducts routine assessments of facility grounds in assigned areas and reports conditions and helps to develop action plans with Grounds Supervisors to correct deficiencies.
  • Completes work orders, including labor and materials in the computerized management maintenance system (CMMS).
  • Daily preparation of trucks and equipment to include: checking truck oil, fluids, tire pressure, proper trailer connection, and ensuring all lights are in working condition. Loads/fills gas cans, mowers, tools and necessary equipment. Secures all equipment.
  • Reviews work orders from creation to completion in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), SchoolDude.
  • Leads team members in assigned duties and ensures projects are completed in a timely manner and in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  • Instructs team members in the use and care of materials and equipment.
  • Resolves issues as they occur in the field. Confers with the Grounds Supervisor regarding unusual problems or situations.
  • Performs all tasks associated with daily grounds maintenance including but not limited to; planting, mowing, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, sweeping, raking, shoveling, string trimming, edging, removing limbs and rocks, pruning or removing shrubs, blowing curbs and sidewalks, removing of bulk trash and debris, maintaining and repairing artificial turf, clearing of storm drains, maintenance of sediment ponds, salting and removing snow with shovel, snow blower, and/or other equipment.
  • Sprays weed killer if certified as a technician.
  • Provides on the job training of team members to effectively and efficiently perform necessary tasks of all ground's maintenance services performed.
  • Oversees proper safety equipment and personal protective equipment usage and practices of the team.
  • Performs daily maintenance of equipment and reports damaged or broken equipment to the Grounds Supervisor.
  • Prepares athletic areas for athletic contests, performs maintenance and/or repairs on artificial turf, and maintains irrigation systems, aerate, seed, fertilizer, lime, drag infields, spread, and level playing surfaces and water fields.
  • Operates equipment that includes, but are not limited to, mowers, tractors, saws, weed eaters, gas-powered edgers, tillers, brooms, hedge trimmers, and other grounds-related equipment not requiring special licensing.
  • Operates pick-up trucks, lift-gates, and box trucks to deliver supplies and materials as well as for daily routine grounds assignments. Operates tractors and attachments used to maintain grounds as needed.
  • Repairs and maintains chain link and wood
  • Works various shifts, scheduled overtime and responds to emergencies to abate repairs outside of normal working hours and holidays as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as

Desired Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Five (5) years of progressive grounds and/or athletic grounds maintenance experience including two years' experience or training in the assigning and scheduling of work duties in a lead capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the
  • Skill in performing skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor in the maintenance and repair of school and office grounds, athletic fields, and related facilities.
  • Skill in cutting grass using commercial front cut mowers, push mowers, and other equipment.
  • Able to lead others, maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Advanced knowledge of grounds maintenance methods, procedures, repairs, and associated hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply work orders, diagrams, sketches, specifications, and manufacturers
  • Ability to oversee the work of others and make independent judgments and decisions within established parameters.
  • Strong customer service skills and works well with team.
  • Strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including the ability to lift and carry a minimum of eighty (80) pounds as well as carry 20 lb. back-pack blower on back, to do extensive walking (2-6 miles per day), bending, stooping, crawling, and kneeling, and some exposure to dust, dirt, noise, and adverse weather conditions in the course of completing daily work assignments (sometimes 10 hour or more periods) may be required.
