Position Overview

We are seeking a mid-career to senior level Research Data Network Scientist/Investigator III-IV who is an independent investigator committed to using research expertise and leadership skills to solve cutting edge problems in health equity research and grow the nation's foremost community laboratory for health outcomes, policy, and primary care research to improve the health of underserved, under-researched populations.

We are seeking a doctoral-level scientist (no exceptions) who is a quantitative scientist with a focus on population health and electronic health data, and who demonstrates a consistent track record of (1) successful federal health research grant proposal leadership and (2) effective leadership in the execution of funded proposals-research protocols, data coordinating center awards, and/or clinical research network programs. Successful applicants will provide documentation of this track record with their application materials. The investigator will also serve as a mentor and consultant to other researchers in the ongoing development of OCHIN's research strategy and portfolio, as well as the research infrastructure and collaborative relationships necessary to support the strategically aligned growth of the OCHIN Research team.

In this role, you will transition into the role of OCHIN's Principal Investigator (PI) in 1-2 federally funded clinical research networks, as well as roles as PI and co-investigator on other funded projects. OCHIN Research plays a key role in several national research networks, including AIM-AHEAD (), PCORnet, (), and CEAL-NCPCR (). You will also play a key role in guiding OCHIN's research data network strategy and enhancing our participation in research network initiative opportunities through leading funding proposals.


OCHIN Research's infrastructure makes it an ideal setting for conducting health equity research, training researchers, and applying for funding, and includes:

  • Multidisciplinary research team that brings the diverse expertise in methods and subject matter necessary for aligning with national and organizational health equity research priorities.
  • Research support services team that supports the research scientist team--including data scientists, clinical informaticists, research assistants, research analysts, research operations (including grants and contracts) professionals, and regulatory/compliance experts.
  • Data Warehouse that incorporates data from over 1000 community-based health care organizations all on a single instance of one electronic health record and sharing a common data model. The data warehouse is inclusive of those who are often under-represented in research including the uninsured, rural, and minoritized populations.
  • Integrated engagement infrastructure designed to ensure broad representation throughout the research lifespan of communities and populations historically under-represented in research.
  • Value-based research portfolio: in partnership with members and diverse institutions, organizations, and agencies through a variety of funding sources and research networks, we conduct equity-focused research to advance evidence that impacts clinical care delivery, health policy, and research methodology.


Essential Duties

Data Networks Scientist

  • Lead OCHIN Research's team in a multicenter network project focused on use of electronic health data in advancing health equity research methods, infrastructure, and training.
  • Lead OCHIN Research role in quantitative sciences and network projects, including PI roles in these projects.
  • Work with Science Program and Research leadership on developing and implementing a strategy for OCHIN's development of, engagement in, and leadership of research data networks.
  • Contribute substantively to the development of research funding proposals and portfolios of funded research projects.
  • Contribute to or lead the development of manuscripts and presentations related to research data networks work involving OCHIN.?
  • Collaborate with other senior investigators on assessing the scientific rigor, fundability, and strategic mission alignment of research funding proposals in the "proposal pipeline".
  • In this role, you will contribute to a vision and strategies for expanding the impact, accessibility, and analytics environments for one of the leading health equity data warehouses in the country and thereby advance our ability to answer questions of key priority to the communities OCHIN serves.
  • Provide guidance and direction to project staff.
  • Ensure that research is conducted in an ethical manner and in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Escalate project issues to supervisor when not resolved within the project.


All Investigators

  • Serving as Investigator on funded research projects:
  • Providing scientific oversight of research projects
  • Participating in operationalizing conceptual variables and translating research questions into appropriate functional and analytic designs and protocols
  • Participating in conducting, and interpreting statistical analyses of research data
  • Contributing to or leading the development of manuscripts and presentations for dissemination of research findings
  • Providing guidance and direction to project staff
  • Ensuring that research is conducted in an ethical manner and in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and institutional policies.
  • Serve as primary liaison to prime PI. Responsible for resolving any scientific and methodological issues with prime PI; responsible for approving any changes to subcontract budget and/or scope of work.
  • Escalate project issues.
  • Collaborating with other practice-based research network (PBRN) investigators and outside partners in designing and developing research proposals:
  • Contributing to the development of specific aims and research strategy (significance, innovation, approach) and well as statistical analysis plans
  • Providing technical/consultative services to PBRN clinician members, affiliated investigators, and other research personnel
  • Contributing to the development of OCHIN's research strategy
  • Pursuing scholarship to remain current with substantive field of knowledge and technical skills related to current project portfolio.
  • Liaising and networking with other OCHIN departments and affiliated research institutions, as appropriate.
  • Serving as the site Principal Investigator (PI) on funded research projects

Investigator III

  • Serving as the lead Principal Investigator (PI) and OCHIN site PI on funded research projects:
    • Leading a program of research in the person's field of expertise
  • Developing and executing on a research strategy.
  • Developing and mentoring early-career researchers in the field.
  • Leading development of research proposals, including identifying research questions, developing research designs, and writing specific aims and research strategy (significance, innovation and approach).
  • This position is expected to generally devote 60% of total proposal development time to leading research proposals in the person's field of expertise.
  • Procure external funding to support for a minimum of 30% FTE of this position's time as well as to support the overall research team.
  • Developing, and mentoring Assistant and Associate Investigators by providing guidance on the mentee's research agenda, grant ideas, and career development opportunities.
  • Participating in the education and training of research staff
  • Other duties as assigned.

Investigator IV

  • Serving as the lead Principal Investigator (PI) and OCHIN site PI on funded research projects.
  • Leading a program of research in the person's field of expertise:
  • Developing and executing on a research strategy
  • Developing and mentoring early-career researcher in the field
  • Leading development of research proposals, including identifying research questions, developing research designs, and writing specific aims and research strategy (significance, innovation and approach).
  • This position is expected to generally devote 80% of total proposal development time to leading research proposals in the person's field of expertise.
  • Procure external funding to support for a minimum of 60% FTE of this position's time as well as to support the overall research team.
  • Developing, mentoring, and supervising Assistant and Associate Investigators by providing guidance on the mentee's research agenda, grant ideas, and career development opportunities
  • Participating in the education and training of research staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • A Doctoral level research or health-related degree and postdoctoral training or equivalent experience in quantitative sciences with a focus on population and electronic health data is required.
  • Experience leading successful federal funding proposals as a Principal Investigator is required.
  • Experience leading research teams in research informatics projects related to EHR electronic health record data is required.
  • A Doctoral level research or health-related degree and postdoctoral training or equivalent experience (degree or additional educational and training must be in a social, behavioral, health services, or other medical or public health field appropriate to the specific field of research required by the position.
  • Thorough knowledge of statistical theory and hypothesis testing, quantitative or qualitative analysis methods, and database management techniques relevant to the design, conduct, and analysis of research projects in the pertinent substantive area.
  • Working knowledge of medicine, public health, and health services issues relevant to the application of research to health care phenomena and health care policy.
  • Working knowledge of specialized models and theories in a discipline area applicable to the research.
  • Working knowledge of standard desktop computing software packages (word processing, spread sheeting, presentation software, Internet browsers, etc.).

Investigator III

  • Demonstrated ability to obtain multiple federal, state, or foundation research grants/contracts is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and publish scientific manuscripts is required.
  • At least 10 years of health-related research experience is required.

Investigator IV

  • Demonstrated ability to obtain sustainable funding (federal, state, or foundation research grants/contracts) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and publish scientific manuscripts is required.
  • At least 15 years of health-related research experience is required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and mentorship experience is required.

Work Location and Travel Requirements

OCHIN is a 100% remote organization with no physical corporate office location. Employees work remotely from home and many of our positions also support our member organizations on-site for new software installations. Base Pay Overview

The typical offer range for this role is minimum to midpoint, with the midpoint representing the average pay in a national market scope for this position. Please keep in mind that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual salary offer will consider a wide range of factors directly relevant to this position, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, responsibility, and experience, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
