Job Description

General Summary of Position
Perform chemical, fluorimetric, enzymatic, fluorescence polarization and fluorimetric enzyme assays on blood, body fluids and exudates to provide timely, accurate and informative results. Studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data and for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Apply appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring.
  • Perform and document quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards.
  • Accurately enter assay results into client reports
  • Resolve validity issues and amend reports.
  • Provide phlebotomy and other specimen collection.
  • Ensure client turnaround times (TATs) are met.
  • Fill all reagents needed and document quality control information for equipment used
  • Prepare equipment for next shift (fill reagents, run controls, etc.).
  • Document and report problems to supervisor.
  • Clean and stock supplies in work area.
  • Enter and track client sample and result information.
  • Perform maintenance procedures as directed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and abnormal test results.
  • Assist and train new technical staff.
  • Assist in development of new procedures and protocols to improve efficiency of department.
  • Act as a resource for the department, other departments, other labs and client inquiries.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Two years previous Medical Technologist experience in comparable clinical laboratory setting required and
    • 1-2 years Two year experience with chemistry, hematology, blood bank and micro set-up experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Health Educ & Welfare (lab) - HEW ASCP, HEW preferred

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
    • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.

    • Ability to interpret and report out on results; proficiency testing.
    • Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the Ability to use them in varied situations.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, Identifying issues, and respecting team members.
