Job Summary:

The Custodian for the City's public parking facilities is responsible for keeping the facility clean and safe for members of the public. The Custodian is a semi-skilled employee who works directly with various cleaning agents and chemicals, to clean and maintain the facilities either manually or using various machines. This is a manual job function within The City of Frederick's Parking Department. The custodian operates under the direct supervision of the Public Parking Superintendent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Remove trash throughout the parking decks, stairwells, and walkways
  • Sweep walkways and stairwells
  • Wipe down stairwell railings and deck equipment
  • Wash windows, deck, and walkways
  • Sweep deck utilizing motorized sweeper
  • Shovel snow
  • Maintain cleanliness and supplies in bathroom facilities within the parking deck
  • Maintain lighting system
  • Assist in the maintenance of deck equipment
  • Maintain inventory of supplies
  • The incumbent is required on a regular basis to operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of standard cleaning procedures and practices
  • Willing to learn and operate light and medium weight equipment.
  • Must have some basic mechanical ability.
  • Ability to communicate orally in an effective manner
  • Ability to exchange information with the public and to exercise strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to handle standard situations with only limited or no variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about the city parking deck. The employee is constantly required to use hands/fingers to pick up trash, wash windows and to operate mechanical equipment. The employee is constantly required to ascend/descend stairs and to position self to maintain cleanliness of deck, stairwells, and walkways. The employee is occasionally required to ascend/descend ladder to service light fixtures. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
