Primary Responsibilities

HDR is seeking a Rail Engineer that is looking to join one of the leading rail and transit design teams in the industry, with an opportunity to design and support multi-disciplinary transit projects that may include: Light Rail, Streetcar, Commuter Rail, High Speed Rail, or Freight Rail projects. The primary duties of the Rail Engineer are to work with project managers and engineers to develop civil design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for design projects across North America. Civil and track assignments include ADA design, station layouts, alignments and profiles, quantity tabulations, 2D/3D CADD support, and project/task management. In this role you will support or lead the development of design criteria, project guides, and project controls. This individual should be a self-starter that can work independently on small tasks or collaborate as part of the team on larger projects. This candidate may also support projects in the field or other duties as needed.

In the role of Rail Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Provide engineering, technical, and design support to the Rail Transit Group.
  • Design track and railway infrastructure in accordance with the quality objectives and regulations, laws, and standards.
  • Collaborate with design team staff in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Design track alignments and special track work with a general knowledge of grading and drainage, utility protection and relocations, roads and parking lots.
  • Prepare drawings, quantity take-offs and estimate support.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives, resolve technical issues and interface with other disciplines.
  • Participate or manage the planning, design, and construction stages of the project.
  • Provide some field support or construction oversight duties as may be required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors and/or master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • PE
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in transit, rail, civil, or highway engineering
  • Hands-on experience with MicroStation, InRoads or Auto Cadd Civil 3-D design
  • Ability to communicate independently with large teams and clients
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Transit or Rail infrastructure design
  • Experience with Metro Transit, MnDOT, CP, BNSF or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team on rail-based corridor projects
  • Preference given to local candidates
