Job Description

OVERVIEW: Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is the country's single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans. LSC currently funds 132 independent nonprofit legal aid organizations with more than 800 offices throughout the nation. LSC's mission is to promote equal access to justice and provide grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.

The Office of Government Relations and Public Affairs (GRPA) is responsible for managing LSC's communications and relationship with Congress, the Executive Branch, the media, and the general public.

This position will require working from an office in Washington, D.C., but is teleworking until LSC returns to in-office work. The successful candidate must live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

LSC requires that all employees be up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when eligible, except as required by law. BASIC FUNCTION:

The primary objectives of the internship are for the intern to:

  1. Understand the relationship between legislative affairs and communications.
  2. Learn how to develop accurate and rapid messages for different audiences.

The intern's hours will be up to 20 hours per week. The internship will run approximately from September through December 2022.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern's principal duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Write materials for LSC events and outreach efforts.
  2. Draft news releases, media alerts, and other media materials;
  3. Track electronic and print media;
  4. Assist in the development and updating of media lists and other databases;
  5. Monitor social media; and
  6. Other related duties as assigned, including, for those equipped to do so, assisting with video editing, website content development and basic graphic design.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

General:

LSC is accepting applications from current undergraduate, graduate, and law students. Ideal candidates can work independently, will have excellent research and writing skills and an interest in government, public policy, communications, and messaging.

Technical/Specialized:

Candidates should have a good understanding of social media and working knowledge of Microsoft Office projects (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with Final Cut Pro X and content management systems (particularly Drupal) is a plus.

This position is paid on an hourly basis in accordance with the following rate schedule:
